With a new sitcom about his life currently airing on television and sold out comedy shows around the world that garner him rave reviews, Chris Rock is on top of the world. It wasn't always this way.
He was born in 1965 in Georgetown, South Carolina, but grew up in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a tough disciplinarian by nature and a truck driver by trade. From a young age, Rock knew he wanted to be a comedian and starting practicing his craft in comedy clubs around New York as a teenager. His idol, Eddie Murphy, helped secure him a place on SNL where he remained as a cast member for three years, beginning in the 1990 season.
An attempt at a movie career followed his departure from SNL, but it failed to catch on and Rock returned to his standup roots in the middle and late '90s with a series of highly praised standup concerts and specials on HBO. His edgy, politically incorrect brand of comedy connected with audiences and in 1999 he starred in "The Chris Rock Show," an Emmy-winning talk show that aired on HBO. In the 2000s, he continued to take various stabs at the movies, but it's on the standup stage that Rock's genius as an entertainer truly shines.
