Like his idol John Belushi, Chris Farley's life and career were tragically cut short by alcohol and drugs. But before that terrible day in 1997, he made the world laugh.
Christopher Crosby Farley was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1964. His debut as a professional comedian occurred on the stage of Chicago's legendary Second City. When he was hired by SNL in 1991, he was thrilled to be following in Belushi's footsteps and that energy showed.
He immediately became a fan favorite, and it wasn't long before the movies called. He appeared in several films with SNL colleague David Spade that were beloved by audiences (if not by critics), but Farley's own personal demons would eventually get the better of him.
On stage, he was bombastic, loud, and willing to do anything for a laugh, but in real life, he was troubled, quiet, and insecure about his talents and his weight. Though he could not defeat those demons, he left behind a comic legacy for fans to enjoy for years to come. He will also be remembered through The Chris Farley Foundation, which works with kids and teens to warn them of the dangers of drugs.
