Dick Wolf, one of television’s most respected drama series creator/producers, is the architect of one of the most successful brands in the history of television – NBC’s “Law & Order.” An Emmy Award-winning producer, Wolf serves as creator and executive producer of the three “Law & Order” drama series from Wolf Films and Universal Media Studios – “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”
Wolf’s “Law & Order” series continue to rewrite the annals of television history. With almost 400 episodes under its belt, “Law & Order” – entering its 18th season on NBC – is the longest-running current drama series on television. It has received 11 consecutive Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nominations – the record for most consecutive series Emmy nominations in the history of television (tied with “Cheers” and “M*A*S*H”) – and won the coveted Emmy in that category in 1997. “Law & Order” is poised to become the longest-running police series and the second longest running drama series in the history of television, second only to “Gunsmoke.” “Law & Order’s” other accolades include: the highly coveted Peabody Award; multiple Emmys; the Crystal Apple Award from the New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting; the Writers Guild Award for Television, and numerous other high ranking tributes.
“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” entering its ninth year on NBC, has been one of the network’s top performers, and continually wins its Tuesday-night time period, monopolizing audiences by a wide margin in ratings, share and demographics. Star Mariska Hargitay (who plays Detective Olivia Benson) has received three Emmy nominations for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and Christopher Meloni, who plays Detective Elliot Stabler, recently earned his first Emmy nomination in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category). In 2005, Amanda Plummer won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, and the same year, Hargitay won the Golden Globe Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.
“Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” entering its seventh season, stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and veteran stage and film actor Eric Bogosian. They are joined by Chris Noth, who is reprising his role as Detective Mike Logan, and Julianne Nicholson as his partner, alternating as lead detectives on cases from the Major Case Squad. “Criminal Intent” makes the groundbreaking move to USA Network in Fall 2007, with a dual run on NBC.
The “Law & Order” brand also includes “Law & Order: Trial by Jury” and the highly-rated NBC telefilm “Exiled: A Law & Order Movie” (one of the top-rated telefilms for the 1997-98 season), in which Noth reprised his role as Detective Logan. In addition, the multi-media franchise includes DVDs and video games, as well as “Crime & Punishment,” the “real life” “Law & Order,” which chronicled cases prosecuted by the San Diego District Attorney’s office and aired for three summers on NBC. Also included is Wolf’s and official series photographer Jessica Burstein’s “Law & Order: Crime Scenes” (Barnes & Noble publishing), a stunning, rivet-bound hardcover book presenting more than 100 black and white crime scene photographs from the show’s most popular episodes.
Wolf’s company also produced “Twin Towers,” the 2003 Academy Award-winning Short Documentary about two brothers, one a policeman and the other a fireman, who lost their lives in the line of duty on September 11. Oscar and Emmy-winning director Bill Guttentag and Robert Port directed the film, which was also screened at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January 2003 and was released in October 2004 on DVD. Wolf and Guttentag are also teaming on a documentary about rock legends The Doors.
In addition, Wolf and Tom Thayer were executive producers of the critically acclaimed HBO original movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” which premiered in May 2007, and told the tragic and powerful story of the subjugation and cultural extermination of the Native Americans. One of the top-rated HBO films in recent history, the film stars Anna Paquin, Adam Beach and Aidan Quinn in a compelling adaptation based on the bestseller by Dee Brown.
Wolf has been a creative force in television for more than 25 years, with an illustrious career as a top advertising executive and continuing as one of television’s most prolific producer/writers with such series as “Conviction,” “L.A. Dragnet,” “Hill Street Blues,” “Miami Vice,” “New York Undercover,” “Arrest & Trial,” “South Beach” and “Feds and Players.” Among his feature-film credits are writer of the screenplay for the hit Paramount release “School Ties,” writer and executive producer of “Masquerade,” and writer and producer of “No Man’s Land.”
Wolf’s personal honors include such awards as: the prestigious Award of Excellence from the Banff Television Festival; the 2002 Creative Achievement Award from NATPE; the Anti-Defamation League’s Distinguished Entertainment Industry Award; the Leadership and Inspiration Award from the Entertainment Industries Council; the Governor’s Award from the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences; the 1997 Achievement Award from the Caucus for Producers, Writers, and Directors, the 1998 Television Showman of the Year Award from the Publicists Guild of America, and the 2002 Tribute from the Museum of Television and Radio. On March 29, 2007, Wolf received a star on Hollywood’s world-famous Walk of Fame.
Wolf is also an Honorary Consul of Monaco and is actively involved in the principality’s prestigious annual television festival, and is its primary liaison with the entertainment community.
