EPISODE 407

Gabe broke the house rules, which he and all of the other comics had agreed to, several times. Given that, we and NBC felt that we simply had no choice but to send him home in order to maintain the fairness and integrity of the game.

So now our final 6 is a final 5. And next week you will see them perform full 5 minute sets for your votes. It will be out of our hands who moves on at that point, America takes over – so the fun is over you have to direct your complaints to your fellow viewers.

Speaking of complaints (that's a segue for those of you who didn't vote for Doug Benson), this week something amazing happened. A good 50% of your postings were somewhat positive. We would like to believe that this has to be because some of you have finally realized that this is a good show. Come on – admit it there's a small part of you that loves Last Comic and you might even love us too. And if you look really deep into your souls you can't deny that these five remaining comics are good and you are glad we picked them.

Of course, we did say 50% so not everyone had nice things to say. Once again, we stand accused of producing a reality show rather than a comedy variety show, of picking bad comics – leaving more talented ones to starve on the boulevard of broken dreams, and not smiling in our photographs. So here are some answers to your postings over the past few weeks.

"Shadow" writes: WOW DAN It's great that instead of dealing with the fact that this show is a hack you start attacking the writer because they don't know your name is Dan and not Doug or that they spelled something wrong. Also funny that you pick responses to those over the real comments that pin point the fact that Michelle hacked someone elses jokes and was played on air as if it was her own. No wonder you aren't made of money. This show should pay us to watch it. But because it is so awful you aren't getting sponsors. Well at least any real company wouldn't shame themselves by associating with your show.

Dan responds: Where to start. First of all "Shadow" (is that your Dungeons and Dragons name? Are you an Orc or a Magic User?), what does it mean when you say the show is "a hack"? Do you mean it's hacky? Is it not alternative enough for you? There is a lot of fine alternative comedy available on Comedy Central, the Internet or in small rooms in your nearest large metropolitan area. I love alternative comedy, but NBC isn't in the alternative comedy business.

You go on to accuse Michele of stealing material. What do you want me to say? Are you demanding an inquest? People come up with the same jokes all the time. Michele is pretty old, how do you know she didn't come up with it first?

As for your rather complicated economic analysis of our show, I should point out that we are happy to have the sponsorship of Capital One. They definitely are a real company, I've seen their commercials on TV.

"Dan **** off" writes: Dan, no wonder ur show tanked, ur a douche and the show was beaten by two RERUNS, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA, there is justice in the world

Dan and Jane respond: Do you work for Variety? Do you seriously care about ratings? This is how we know you don't work for Variety for the following reasons:

  1. The show is not tanking. Far from it. Someone who worked for Variety would know that.
  2. Most Variety reports do not use the phrase "ur a douche" in their ratings analyses or reviews.
  3. Of course there is always the chance that you are Brian Lowry. See our Treasure Hunters review if you really want to enjoy your day.

"SadlyWatching only the last half...hoping" writes: Hey thanks for replying to my comment Dan. I may not have explained myself well enough, the house scenes don't bother me, in fact in season 3 I loved the challenges brought on by the house aspect of the show, what I didn't like is the casting for the house segments. I think the challenges would be just as funny with all funny comics instead of a portion of the comics being chosen just because of their controversial behavior, aka starting house fights. So kudos to house challenges, perhaps next season the housemates could be chosen by the public?

Dan responds: A lot of people made comments along these lines, but this was one of the more concise and less hostile postings. I've said it before and I would prefer to not have to say it again. Comedy is objective. Look at the voting of the online community in the Last Comic Downloaded competition. Do you agree with every choice? Of course not. There is no way to give the audience the vote in the preliminary rounds. You are welcome to disagree with the casting decisions we all made. I feel confident that if the audience had been deciding which of the top 40 comics made it to the house, all 5 of the comics who will be performing next Tuesday night would have made it.

"NBC Memo" writes: Looks like the NBC Memo that was sent out is really picking up steam. NBC sent a memo out instructing people to come here and defend the show and they will receive perks. Sorry NBC, we know it's a fluke and the show sucks because the Producers have no clue about "comedy".

Dan responds:
Seriously, get a life. Don't you have homework to do?
