Fear Factor Breakfast

Everybody knows it's not a good idea to skip breakfast. But when it comes to eating the Fear Factor breakfast - liquified pig liver protein shake, dead silkworm cereal, and balut (a boiled, fertilized duck egg) - skipping the first meal of the day starts making a whole lot of sense. Here's contestant Susan Maier to share her unforgettable eating experience.

FEAR FACTOR: What was going through your head when you first saw all that food put in front of you?

SUSAN MAIER: I think the main thing that was going through my head was just the quantity of everything I had to eat and drink. I started with the glasses of liver. I thought those would be the toughest so I wanted to go ahead and knock some of that out. It got a little tough at the end just because my stomach was starting to get filled up and the texture just started to get real thick and more difficult for me to get down. Then I moved on to the eggs and I ate both of the eggs and I think I started to gag a little bit. It wasn't just the eggs, it was just already having the liver and then the eggs on top of that.

FEAR FACTOR: But then there was more.

SUSAN MAIER: Then I decided to go for the silk worms and I started eating those and I was doing all right at the beginning. I think I got about half way through with the silk worms and I just started to gag and it was just really hard for me to chew them up and swallow them and get them down and then I thought I could chase it down with a little bit of liver. But that didn't work because the liver just made it even more congested all up in there. I mean the liver was pretty disgusting. I spit up a little bit but then I ate the spit up which I thought was a good effort.

FEAR FACTOR: How did you get yourself through that liver?

SUSAN MAIER: Well with the liver I was just thinking "okay this is just sort of like a protein shake, a chocolate shake, something like that." When I got done with the liver I didn't think the silk worms were going to be as bad as they were. Those were really tough for me and I don't know if it's just because I saved them till last. Even if I'd had them first they still would have been tough.

FEAR FACTOR: What was going on in your mind as you ate the silkworm cereal?

SUSAN MAIER: As the worms were going down, I'm thinking "Um, I didn't think that these were going to be as difficult to eat right now. I'm having a really hard time chewing them up and swallowing them. I thought I would be able to swallow them more whole but I can't. I've got to chew them up and it's just all I can do to swallow the little bit that's in my mouth. What I really need to do is pick up the whole bowl and just totally just chug it down. But then if I put all of them in my mouth I'm just going to have to chew it all and then swallow all of that and I'm not going to be able to do it. Um, it's just too much, there's too many worms."

FEAR FACTOR: Talk about hitting the spot where you just couldn't put another spoon full in you mouth and you had to run away.

SUSAN MAIER: Basically I'd been gagging for a while and I kept trying to put more spoonfuls in my mouth and I kept gagging and gagging and then I knew that I was going to throw up so I had to hop up and run away. I know it was disgusting but I didn't want to throw up right there in front of everybody.
