Ever imagine what it would be like to stick your face deep into a box of
live maggots and come out with a mouth chock full of squirming worms? Here's
a Fear Factor stunt that'll give you a little taste...
Of all the worms that have come through the Fear Factor offices - and there
have been many -- none have been more maggoty than wax worms. They're yellow
and squishy and kind of look like maggots with a thyroid condition. Just
imagine having to press your face against 30,000 of them.
Now all we needed was something that the contestants would have to retrieve
from the worm box. We tried different kinds of fruits but nothing really
seemed to work. They were either too big or too small or too mushy. Besides,
we thought, wouldn't it be great if we could bury something gross in all
those worms?
It's hard to know when inspiration will strike while developing a Fear
Factor stunt. You can spend all afternoon at the office trying to think of
gross things to put in the bottom of a box and not figure it out until
you're in the car driving home. You'll be sitting at a light, listening to
the radio, and - voila! - chicken feet.
We'd fill the box with 30,000 worms, bury 20 chicken feet underneath them,
and challenge the contestants to get as many feet as they could using only
their mouths. The worms were not only gross to look at and to touch but we
also found out there was an added bonus-they smelled absolutely horrible.
"The smell was so bad," said one unhappy contestant after taking in a
mouthful. "It was all up my nose and it wouldn't go away. You feel like
you're eating manure."
No doubt about it, these wax worms were gross. One contestant probably
summed it up best when she said, "It was a lot harder than I thought it was
going to be."
