Episode 108 September 5, 2001
It's a rainy, slippery day as players arrive for their first stunt. Surrounded by telephone poles, the players learn they must climb to the top of one 30-foot pole, balance on top, then leap one and half times the distance of their body and grab onto a trapeze hanging in the distance. They must maintain their grip for at least five seconds in order to advance and have a shot at $50,000.
In a Fear Factor first, one by one the majority of contestants fail to complete the stunt in the allotted time of 15 minutes. Jennifer gets stuck and with cold hands has trouble maintaining a grip; Milauna keeps slipping back to the bottom; Catherine makes it to the top but can't make the jump; Michael gets to the top, makes the jump, but can't hang on; Phil, in darkness, reaches the top twice but misses the jump both times. Only Martin successfully stares down the trapeze. The producers were prepared for this unlikely event and had a rule in the official rule book that said: "To keep the game going, the only player to complete the stunt is automatically awarded $10,000 and all the players are asked back for day two."
The others are amazed at their second chance - but also, totally grossed out by what they must do. In a Chinese restaurant setting, the players feast their eyes on the Pig Feast. Each player must open a fortune cookie, which reveals which part of the pig they are "fortunate" enough to eat. Phil draws first and attemts to eat the kidney; however, he can't quite force it down in time. He's eliminated and Milauna is next. Pig heart, anyone? Milauna has trouble chewing - and also runs out of time. Michael bellies up to pig tongue - and successfully eats it all. Martin -- the big winner on day one -- fails to swallow the pig liver and is eliminated. Catherine grimaces as she picks the snout. It's rubbery and difficult to eat - Catherine quits. Knowing that it's down to her and Michael, Jennifer gnaws on pig ears with determination. With only seconds left, she finishes her treat!
A wet desert landscape is the backdrop for the final stunt. Jennifer and Michael realize their luck at making it this far - after bombing on day one. Their challenge today is the Truck Traverse. A semi-truck has been turned into a climbing wall. As the truck travels 40 miles per hour down the desolate highway, Michael and Jennifer must climb up the side of it and onto the truck's roof. It sounds easier than it is. With four miles to complete the climb, Michael goes first. Wind and motion are a factor - and Michael struggles to maintain his grip. Using all his strength, Michael completes the stunt in less than three minutes. Jennifer, who rock climbs at the gym, has a harder time and slips often. Midway across the truck, she misses a foothold and falls. She regains her footing and keeps going, but is unable to beat Michael's time. Michael wins!
