Episode 107 July 16, 2001
Off the sunny shores of Catalina Island, California our six players board a submarine where Joe awaits. The Sub Dive requires players to dive up to 7 feet deep and collect glow sticks that are strung underneath the sub. The catch is that they must collect as many glow sticks as possible on one breath of air - in water that is 55 degrees. The two men and two women who gather the most - and face their fears of drowning and claustrophobia -- will advance to the next day's stunt.
Tripp, no fan of the ocean, strips down and dives in first. His first reaction is to the cold water! He's unable to handle it...and reemerges without completing the task. After an encouraging word from Joe, Edward jumps into the icy water. Edward psychs himself up, dives under and grabs one glow stick. Up next is Matt, who admits to a fear of deep water. Nonetheless, he retrieves a glow stick. Tripp is eliminated. The ladies are up next. Wendy is ready, but nervous. "New car, new car," is her mantra. Wendy grabs one, which makes Cybill nervous. She dives in, but has a hard time spotting the glow sticks. Finally, she manages to grab one and resurface. Kari is last to dive. She jumps in but has trouble breathing... finally she dives down and manages to grab a glow stick. All the women advance.
Day two finds the players in a dark, dreary brick basement. Joe sarcastically tells them it's one of Fear Factor's most dangerous stunts. What seems like a simple dart toss, is complicated by the fact that the target is over 6 feet away. Plus, what the players don't realize is that the higher the number they hit, the more live crickets they will have to eat! The totals are: Edward, 2; Wendy, 4; Matt, 6; Cybill, 3; Kari, 6. Kari has an advantage since (according to her) she was "raised on crickets." They have one minute per cricket to eat them all - and everyone reluctantly does it.
For the final stunt, the players arrive at a power plant location and discover the Inverted Speed Drop. As Joe explains, they each will be hung by their ankles over 130 feet in the air from a crane. They will slide at over 60 miles per hour down a zip line and cross over a target. Whomever drops a bean bag closest to a target on the ground, wins. Edward is immediately wary due to a fear of heights. Wendy is "up" first - and overshoots. Cybill is closer, and eliminates Wendy. Edward overcomes his fear of heights and drops a near-perfect bullseye! Despite Kari and Matt's efforts, they are unable to get closer which leaves Edward $50,000 richer.
