Fear Factor Pizza

How do you make a Fear Factor pizza? You start with a bile-based crust, pour on some cow blood sauce, add some real stinky cheese, and top it all off with fish eyes and live worms. Here's Fear Factor contestant Shelby Smith to tell you about the worst slice of pizza she's ever had in her life.

FEAR FACTOR: So tell us what it was like to eat a slice of Fear Factor pizza.

SHELBY SMITH: When I picked the pizza up, I knew that when Joe counted down I was going to start out holding my nose because the smell was so horrible. Even when the other contestants were eating it before me, I could not even stand the smell. So I thought, well, maybe that might help deter the taste a little bit. So I picked it up and when Joe said "Go," I said "This is it, I've got to do it." I put the first bite in my mouth. But as soon as I tried to get the first bite down and actually swallow, it was just over from that point. Not being able to get the first bite down without gagging totally made me say to myself "I don't know if I can do this." I really started doubting myself after that first bite. And it did not get easier with every bite. The time felt like it went so quickly. Even being halfway done, I remember just saying "you've got to do it, you've got to do it." But the little voice was just telling me there's no way. It tasted so horrible and I think getting towards the end it was not so much the taste or the smell anymore. It was forcing it down after chewing it. It was so hard to chew. The crust on that was just so chewy. It was hard to get it down my throat. It didn't even become a matter of taste or smell. At the end, it was just getting it down. And when I only had less than two minutes to go and I still had over a mouthful to get down, I started getting worried. And I think the only thing that really pushed me was Joe started really encouraging me. 'Cause I started coming back to reality saying, "Okay, if I don't do this, I'm not gonna be here tomorrow."

FEAR FACTOR: The contestant before you threw up after eating a slice. What was it like to follow that?

SHELBY SMITH: I couldn't believe it. That really got me worried because after seeing how well he had done on the first stunt, I'd all along thought he was my toughest competition. I was starting to doubt myself how I was going to do.

FEAR FACTOR: So what do worms taste like?

SHELBY SMITH: Between all the coagulated blood and the cheese and the worms, I don't think I could even, at the time, differentiate what was in my mouth. I didn't even feel the crunching. I was chewing so quickly and trying just to get through it. There was so much stuff put together. Once it got inside my mouth and I was just chewing everything up, it really didn't even matter at that point.
