Episode #207 - "Upon The Wasted Building"
Downtown Explosion - Instructions for Body Retrieval & Identification
- Refer to grid of disaster site when searching.
- Before removal, assign body a number. Write this number on a manila envelope that will remain with body.
- Write the same number on a flag, placing the flag at location of body.
- Put body or remains into body bag and transfer to the mass fatality morgue.
- This temporary morgue is divided into six sections: Admissions, Personal Effects, Prints, Searching, X-Ray, Releasing.
- All bodies must be admitted so the death toll remains accurate. At this point, remains are removed and photographed (B&W film only).
- Decedent is then stripped of all clothing, shoes and jewelry which are put into a personal effects bag, logged and labeled with corresponding body number.
- The body is fingerprinted, if possible. If not, footprints will be taken. Prints are then scanned into the national database.
- If prints aren't an option, skull and dental x-rays are taken.
- This process should result in a name for the victim. When the body is identified, family is notified and body is released.
